World impact of Messi’s Ballon d’Or

www.fcbarcelona.cat

Leo Messi winning the Ballon d’Or has made most of the headlines in Spain, but the story was also reported elsewhere in the world, especially in his home continent of South America.

If there is any one person that is dominating the news right now, then his name is Leo Messi. The FIFA Ballon d’Or 2010 is in the headlines in Catalonia, Spain and the rest of the world.

Local news
sport_200The Catalan sports dailies, ‘Sport’, ‘El Mundo Deportivo’ and ‘El 9 Esportiu’ have all mentioned not just Leo Messi but also the way the top three were all Barça players. ‘Sport’ speaks of ‘Gold for Messi. Glory for Barça’, while ‘Mundo Deportivo’ leads with ‘Messi! Leo wins second Ballon d’Or aged 23 anys’ and ‘El 9 Esportiu’ proclaims that ‘Messi brings it back’.

Surprise choice
Other papers expressed their shock that neither Iniesta nor Xavi collected the award after all they did at the World Cup in South Africa. ‘Marca’ bemoans ‘Two giants and one anti-Spanish’ with pictures of Messi and Mourinho. The paper was annoyed that FIFA and Sepp Blatter failed to recognise any of Xavi, Iniesta or Del Bosque. ‘As’ was of a similar mind, and felt ‘Spain is seething’ that Messi was picked ahead of Iniesta and Xavi.

General papers
lavanguardia_200Despite the important announcement of the ETA ceasefire, Leo Messi and his prize also got plenty of coverage in the national broadsheets. ‘El Periódico de Catalunya’, ‘La Vanguardia’ and ‘Ara’ all included front page stories and extensive coverage of the events in Zurich.

‘El País’, ‘El Mundo’, ‘Público’ and ‘ABC’ also reported on Messi’s award, and the general suggestion was that the Argentine star is up there with Di Stefano, Pelé, Cruyff and Maradona.

King of Argentina

ole_200And naturally there was joy in Messi’s home country. In Argentina, ‘Olé’ filled the front page with the news, under the headline ‘The secret of his golds’. ‘Clarín’ and ‘La Nación’ also had plenty to say about the award.

But other Latin American countries also hailed yet another success for the Bará striker, including Brazilian daily O’Globo.

Europe too
l_equip_200Back in Europe, the FIFA party was also a major story. French paper ‘L’Équipe’, for instance, titled its report with the play on words ‘Messi? Mais sí’.

But Italian sports paper ‘Gazzetta dello Sport’ was less impressed with the decision, and felt it was a “Ballon d’Or for a disappointing year”, while ‘Corriere dello Sport’ also considered it surprising that Messi was chosen.

A Five Star Stadium

The old Les Corts ground after several expansions had increased its capacity to 60,000.
It was still not big enough to cope with the surging interest in the team though, especially after the arrival of Hungarian superstar Ladislau Kubala and the new Barça stadium was built to replace it.

The stadium was designed by architects Francesc Mitjans Miró and Josep Soteras Mauri, with the collaboration of Lorenzo García Barbón, and it was constructed between 1954 and 1957, using mainly concrete and iron. The whole project cost a staggering 288 million pesetas, which meant the club would spend the following years in heavy debt.

Although it was originally going to go under the official name of ‘Estadi del FC Barcelona’, it soon came to be popularly known as the 'Camp Nou' (the ‘new ground’), as opposed to the club’s old home at Les Corts. It was not until the 2000/2001 season that, following a mail vote made by the club membership, that the decision was made to make ‘Camp Nou’ the official name of the stadium. Of the 29,102 votes the club received, a total of 19,861 (68.25%) preferred Camp Nou to Estadi del FC Barcelona.

The stadium’s maximum height is 48 metres, and it covers a surface area of 55,000 square metres (250 metres long and 220 metres wide). In accordance with UEFA stipulations, the playing area has been downsized to 105 metres x 68 metres.

With a capacity of 99,354, it is now the biggest stadium in Europe. However, the total capacity has varied over the years owing to different modifications. When it was first opened in 1957, it held 93,053 spectators, which would be increased to 120,000 in 1982 on occasion of the FIFA World Cup. However, the introduction of new regulations outlawing standing areas reduced the stadium’s capacity in the late 1990s to just under 99,000.

In the 1998-99 season, UEFA recognised the services and functionalities of the Camp Nou by awarding it five star status. In the whole of Spain there are only three other stadiums that can claim that, the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium, also in Barcelona, the new Cartuja Olympic Stadium in Seville and the Vicente Calderón, home of Atlético Madrid.

Of the different facilities on offer inside the stadium, of particular note are a chapel next to the changing rooms, the presidential box, the VIPs lounge, the press rooms, several television studios, the Sports Medicine Centre, the Operative Control Unit (UCO), the veteran players area, the FC Barcelona club museum, the nursery and the offices of all of the many different club departments.

Lionel Andrés Messi

This Argentinian striker's footballing career started in 1995 at Newell's Old Boys, where he played until the year 2000. At the age of 13, Lionel Messi crossed the Atlantic to try his luck in Barcelona, and joined the Under 14s.
Messi made spectacular progress at each of the different age levels, climbing through the ranks of the different youth teams and then Barça C, followed by Barça B and the first team in record time.
In the 2003-2004 season, when he was still only 16, Messi made his first team debut in a friendly with Porto that marked the opening of the new Dragao stadium. The following championship-winning season, Messi made his first appearance in an official match on October 16, 2004, in Barcelona's derby win against Espanyol at the Olympic Stadium (0-1).
With several first team players seriously injured, the services of several reserve team players were called upon, and Messi became a regular feature of Barça squads. On May 1, 2005, he became the youngest player ever to score a league goal for FC Barcelona - against Albacete when Messi was only 17 years, 10 months and 7 days old. That record would eventually be beaten by Bojan.
At the Under 20 World Cup in Holland, Messi not only won the title with Argentina, but was also the leading goalscorer and was voted best player in the tournament. Aged 18 years, he had become one of the hottest properties in the world game. Shortly after, he made his first full international appearance in a friendly against Hungary.
His breakthrough as a player came in the 2005-06 season, starting with an amazing performance in the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Juventus. He was also outstanding at the Santiago Bernabéu, in Barcelona's unforgettable 3-0 win, and also at Stamford Bridge, in the Champions League match against Chelsea. Injury kept him sidelined for much of the latter stage of the season. Messi played a total of 17 league games, 6 in the Champions League and 2 in the Copa del Rey. Messi scored eight goals.

CHARACTERISTICS
Messi is an unusual player. He is highly creative, and has the skills to take on defenders with ease. He is a versatile left-footed player who can play either in the middle or on either wing, or even as a centre forward.
Although he is quite short, he is so fast and physically strong that he can cope with larger opponents. He is incredibly powerful, and a specialist in such dead ball situations as corners, free kicks and penalties.
Leo Messi is cool-headed and able to assume several responsibilities in times of need. He is a player who is destined to have a very successful career in football.
