Global support for Éric Abidal Forgetting colours or disputes, the football world has come together to support the FC Barcelona player, Eric Abidal, following the news that he was diagnosed with a tumor on his liver and will have to undergo surgery . Xavi: "Abidal is an example to us all”

Barça’s vice captain expressed the support of the team for Eric Abidal and his family and highlighted the positive nature of the player with regard to his illness. Xavi also described as "outrageous" the allegations of doping.

Xavi: “Abidal is an example to us all”
Criticism of UEFA
UEFA has banned Real Madrid and Olympique Lyon from wearing shirts with messages of support for Abidal, in the moments before the Champions League match on Wednesday. Xavi expressed his disappointment: "It seems to me that the decision is not very humane. In life there are things far more important than football and sometimes we give priority to things that have nothing to do with what is really important."
"This is the toughest time I've had at the club, but Abidal will get over it because mentally he’s one of the toughest people I know". Xavi Hernandez explained to the media, echoing the feelings of his teammates, after hearing about Abidal’s illness, which will force him to undergo surgery on Thursday. Barça’s vice captain highlighted the good state of mind of the French defender with regard to the terrible shock: "These are difficult times for him and his family. We have given him a lot of encouragement, but it was him who cheered us up most. He’s an example to all of us ".

Surprised by Abidal’s state of mind
2011-03-16_ENTRENO_28.JPGXavi expressed surprise at Abidal’s state of mind when the player visited his teammates at the training ground to say goodbye to his fellow players: "He’s an example of positivity. He said that that’s life, that we carry on as we are and we beat Getafe on Saturday. We’ll try to win and dedicate it to Abi and his family”.

Outrage over doping allegations
Xavi supported the actions of the Club with regard to the doping accusations about first team players: "The Club has positioned itself against these allegations. They are atrocious accusations that have nothing to do with football or with Barça".

Xavi believes that in some sectors of the football world there is "impunity -they’re going too far and are going beyond acceptable limits". Xavi, however, warned those who would try to disrupt the team: "There are lots of people who can’t stand the fact that Barça is a model of playing and behavior, but that makes us feel better and unites us even more”.

Messi: "Being in the Champions League gives us strength for the rest of the season"

Leo Messi says the team are full of confidence coming into the final stretch of the season, and beating Arsenal in the Champions League last 16 has given them "strength for what is left."

Messi: “Being in the Champions League gives us strength for the rest of the season“
Humility, work rate, speed, genius, magic and love of football. All this and much more make up Leo Messi. He’s a leader, on and off the pitch. Background noise doesn’t affect him. Quite the contrary, it serves as a stimulus. He’s 2 goals away from matching his scoring record and nobody doubts that he’ll beat it. In a conversation with Barça TV and www.fcbarcelona.cat he explains how he and the team view the most crucial stretch of the season.

This year you’re scoring more goals than ever. You’re on course to beat your personal best. The bar is very high. Do you think you can maintain this level longer? "I don’t know what will happen in a few years. I’ll try to maintain the same level, and am first to be interested in doing things right. One day this will end and I won’t score 46 or 47 goals, but I’ll always try to give my best”.

Does the fact that you’re playing up front with Pedro and Villa, players with so much mobility, help? "Having them by my side, and the other players behind us as well. In short, having the team that we have is what helps me. We all make each other better. It’s the best thing about this team. Everybody knows their role and we all complement each other. That’s why the game seems so easy”.

2010-09-24_ENTRENO_11.JPGThere’s no way to get you to rest. Pep asks you but gets nowhere. Wouldn’t it be good for you to rest for the odd game? "I feel good and I don’t like to miss games. I hate watching the games either from the bench or from the stands. If I’m fit to play, I want to play, and hope to play every game I can".

Keeping the 5 point lead over Real Madrid until you play them in the Bernabéu will be key to winning the league? "I don’t know if it’s key, but it’s a lot different to have the 5 point lead when we play them than not to have it. 5 points are an important lead that is reassuring. In the match In Madrid, they’ll need to go for us to beat us, and we can play on that. A 5 point lead is pretty reassuring”.

Do the serious insinuations of late, everything talked about the team, make you stronger for the final run-in? "Yes, that’s it. We're above all this. We don’t pay any attention to what is said and discussed. We get on with our work, to carry on in the same way. I don’t know for what purpose these things are said, but we won’t get involved and we’ll just focus on playing”.

2011-03-15_ENTREVISTA_LEO_MESSI_009.jpgThe draw for the Champions is on Friday. "Getting through the last round can be a turning point for the team? "It's important to be in the Champions League. We came through a very complicated tie against Arsenal and it gives us great strength for what’s to come”.

For the football, the type of game the team plays, is Barça the favorite for the Champions League? "Ourselves, Madrid, and Chelsea are favorites for this years Champions League."

Some people felt that you scored your best goal against Arsenal. Getafe at home on Saturday. Do you still think that was the best goal you have scored? "For me, yes. If we look at it as the sweetest or most difficult, for me the best one was the one against Getafe."

Session with a lot missing

The club resumed training on Wednesday to prepare for the game against Getafe. 15 first team players including Alves and Adriano, who worked apart from the group, and three Barça B players took part in the session.

Session with a lot missing
Abidal with his teammates
On Tuesday Eric Abidal was diagnosed with a tumor on his liver which will be operated on this Thursday. The French player popped into the Joan Gamper training ground on Wednesday, before the start of training, to see his teammates.
After the draw with Sevilla and having enjoyed two days off, the team led by Josep Guardiola returned to training on Wednesday in order to start preparing for next Saturday’s game at the Camp Nou, against Getafe.

This Wednesday’s session was notable for missing players. Five players, Alves, Adriano, Maxwell, Pedro and Messi, all finished the match in Seville with injury problems. Also not present were the injured Puyol, and Abidal, who will have surgery this Thursday on the tumour on his liver.

Adriano and Alves worked separately
2011-03-16_ENTRENO_14.JPGA total of 18 players participated in the training session at the Joan Gamper training ground, from 11a.m., 15 first team players and three from the reserves. However, of the first team players Alves and Adriano, the former with bruised right ankle tendons, and the latter with a muscle strain in his left leg, worked apart from the rest of the group, accompanied by a recovery coach.

Treatment for Maxwell, Pedro and Messi
2011-03-16_ENTRENO_17.JPGAs for the other three players with injury problems, i.e. Maxwell, Messi and Pedro, all 3 received treatment. Maxwell, with discomfort in his right thigh muscle, and Pedro, with a groin strain, are both serious doubts for the Getafe match. Messi, meanwhile, is recovering from a heavy blow to his right knee, and his availability for Saturday's game will depend on how well he recovers.

16 players available to Guardiola
13 first team players carried out the normal training session, plus Montoya, Fontàs and Miño from the Barça B team. On a very cloudy day but without rain, Barça began the session with the usual warm-up exercises and drills.

75 goals in the league from open play

Barça is the top scorer in the league by far thanks to the combination game it plays, as 75 of the 79 goals scored have been from open play.

75 goals in the league from open play
In recent history Barça has always had a lot of possession, but that has to be converted into goals. Guardiola has improved the formula each season and this season the team is getting a better performance than ever from the Barça style triangulations.

95% of goals from open play
The proportion of goals from open play is the highest since Guardiola took over the team. Barça has scored 75 of the 79 goals in the league with the type of football that has captured the admiration of everybody in football, and only four goals have been from set pieces. This figure continues to reaffirm the superiority of the Barça game.

The effectiveness of the club’s style of play continues to grow with Guardiola at the helm, as in his first season his players scored 82 goals from open play and in the previous season, 77. These figures, however, were achieved after playing the entire league, while the 75 current goals have been scored with 10 games remaining.

Corners are also moves
Since his arrival, Guardiola has made strategy one of the team’s stronger points. In his first season Barça scored 7 goals from corners in the league and in the second 8 were scored, whilst in the current season we can count only 1.

This is because this season Barça usually take short corners, to take advantage of their superior combination play. These corners are turned into planned moves. Barça has already scored 3 goals in the league from these plays, and in the stats they count within the 75 goals from open play.

Penalties and free-kicks
In previous seasons, the players had scored 10 goals from free kicks in the league, whereas this season they’ve only scored 1, mainly because some of the specialist free-kick takers have left, like Marquez, Henry, and Ibrahimovic and because no goal has been scored from a cross from a free-kick as in previous seasons. Moreover, in the first season 6 goals were scored from the penalty spot, in the second season 3, and this season so far only 2.

The motivation of a safe pair of hands

Despite winning so many team and individual titles, Valdés says he is as motivated as ever to do his best for Barça, and claims the team is to be thanked for the many successes that they intend to repeat.

The motivation of a safe pair of hands
Equalling Ramallets
Against Sevilla on Sunday, Víctor Valdés equalled the legendary Antoni Ramallets’ tally of 288 league appearances for Barcelona. Now he only has to catch Andoni Zubizarreta, who played 301 games.

Ramallets had already said in October’s edition of the Barça Magazine which brought together the past and present of Barcelona goalkeeping at the Camp Nou. “Records are there to be broken. I happy that it should be to a lad like Víctor”. Five months on, and against Getafe, Valdés will be able to become the second most used Barça goalkeeper ever in the league, with 289 outings.

The way things are going, Valdés won’t take long to get to 301 league games, the same number as the current director of professional football, Andoni Zubizarreta, who kept goal for Barça between 1986 and 1994. “For me, Zubi, Ramallets and Sadurní have set historic standards in goal for Barça. They defended our shirt for many years and have all my respect”, said Valdés.
After letting in just 13 goals in 25 league matches, Valdés is well on course for his fourth Zamora Trophy, and third in a row. Having also won so many team titles, he is now consolidated as one of the best goalkeepers in the game and an absolute guarantee between the FC Barcelona sticks.

In an interview given to Canal + Sweden, the BBC and Al Jazeera, Valdés spoke about his motivation not just to be a good goalkeeper, but also in other facets of life. “I go to train every day in search of new knowledge, and it’s all thanks to the manager we have. I have to appreciate where I live, what I have, my family … It is a case of adding things up and remembering the great times I have had celebrating titles with the fans, and working hard to win even more. That is our motivation”.

Spanish league among the best in the world
Valdés does not agree that the Spanish league has become an annual two-horse race. “I think the Spanish league is very competitive” he said. “I think the best players are here. Every year the teams reinforce themselves well. Little by little football is evolving but I think all of the teams play very intense football.”

Rivalry with Real Madrid
Mourinho being at Real Madrid, claims Valdés, has not meant there is any more rivalry between them and FC Barcelona. The FCB stopper said that their rivalry “is purely sporting … Mourinho is a coach who generates a lot of media opinion. That’s how he works and we have to respect that. I think there will always be rivalry with Real Madrid whether Mourinho is there or not … the local players at this club intensely experience every win we get against the all-whites.”

New challenges
Valdés accepts that “the time will come to look for new challenges … Although I can’t imagine myself wearing any other shirt than Barça’s, I know what I am like, and I know the day will come when I’ll want to go off in search of new challenges, to get to know new cultures and new forms of football.”

International role
Finally, the Barça goalkeeper spoke about his experiences representing the Spanish national team. “I have to thank Vicente del Bosque, who gave me a late call-up for the World Cup. I did all I could to help the team in every way. I think all players should do their little bit for the World Cup cause. I was very pleased to get to go. Of course, any professional always wants to get to play, but I consider myself part of the group and if I have to do other jobs, then I’m delighted to do so”.

Ten league games to go

The 2010/11 season is moving into the final lap. There are just ten games left to play and Barça have a 5 point lead on Real Madrid to defend, and have the experience of recent seasons to draw upon.

Ten league games to go Seven months on, the league season is drawing to a close. There are ten games in April and May and 30 points to play for. Barça have led the way since beating Real Madrid 5-0 in game 13 and will be looking to hold onto that position and conquer the third consecutive championship of the Guardiola era.

FCB_-_REAL_MADRID_x72x.JPGWhat’s left
FC Barcelona still have to travel to Villarreal, Real Madrid, Real Sociedad, Levante and Malaga. But all the time they’ll be looking over their shoulder at José Mourinho and his team, whose remaining away fixtures include the derby against Atlético Madrid at the Vicente Calderón as well as trips to San Mamés, Mestalla, the Sánchez Pizjuán and the Madrigal.

But home games also matter, and in Barça’s case that means dealing with the visits of Getafe, in March, and then Almeria, Osasuna, Espanyol and Deportivo. Meanwhile, Madrid entertain Sporting, Zaragoza, Getafe, Almeria, and also have the clásico against Barça on April 16.

Biggest game of all
T rm-fcb26_x12x.jpghe Madrid v Barça fixture is likely to have a huge bearing on the final outcome of the competition. Like in the last two seasons, the Santiago Bernabéu holds the key, and the Catalans will be hoping to repeat the success of two famous wins in the Spanish capital under Pep Guardiola.

In the 2008/09 season, Barça were four points clear at the top of the league and their 6-2 win as good as settled the title. Madrid failed to regroup after that humiliation, and lost all their remaining matches.

Last season, 2009/10, things were more closely matches at clásico time, with the league leaders tied on 71 points. But Barcelona won again, this time 2-0, and that was the impetus for a successful run-in to the championship, which they ended with a record 99 points compared to Madrid and Pellegrini’s 96 points.

History favours Barça
In both the last two seasons, Barcelona have managed to get more points than Real Madrid in the last ten matches. Last year, they won 9 and only dropped two points, at Cornellà-El Prat, a total of 28 points, compared to just 25 for Madrid from 8 wins, a draw and a defeat. In the 2008/09 season, Barça got 18 points from five wins, 3 draws and 2 losses that barely count because they had already won the league title by that stage. That year, Madrid got just 15 of the last 30 points in play and finished the championship nine points adrift of Barça.

Abidal to be operated on this Thursday

A tumour in Barça’s French international defender Eric Abidal’s liver has been detected and the player will be operated on this Thursday.

Abidal to be operated on this Thursday A tumour in Barça’s French international defender Eric Abidal’s liver has been detected and the player will be operated on this Thursday. Following the detection of the tumour Eric Abidal will be operated on at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona this Friday by Doctor Josep Fuster Obregon.
